Privacy Policy for Bhakti Bhoomi

Last updated: June 21, 2026 · Effective: June 21, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Bhakti Bhoomi ("We", "Us", "Our") handles your information when you use our mobile application and related services. By using Bhakti Bhoomi, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. What is Bhakti Bhoomi?

Bhakti Bhoomi is a devotional app for reading sacred texts (such as the Bhagavad Gita, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Vedas, and others), listening to mantras and aarti, following a Panchang (Hindu almanac) and festivals, and keeping a daily practice (japa counter, reminders, and a reading streak). You can browse most of the app without an account. Creating an account unlocks features such as bookmarks, likes, comments, and the community (Sangha) feed.

2. Summary

  • Reading is open. You can browse scriptures, mantras, aarti, the Panchang, and festivals without an account.
  • An account is optional and only needed for bookmarks, likes, comments, and posting in the community.
  • Some data stays only on your device — your japa counts, reading streak, ritual reminders, locally chosen deity images, and app preferences.
  • Account data is stored on our servers — your profile and any content you choose to save (bookmarks, likes, comments, posts).
  • We do not sell your personal data, and we show no third-party advertising.

3. Information You Provide (Account)

If you choose to create an account, we collect:

  • Registration details — your first name, last name, username, and email address.
  • Password — stored only in a securely hashed (one-way) form; we never store or see your plain-text password.
  • Profile and cover images — if you upload them. Images are hosted on our media provider (see Section 7).

You may use the app's reading features without providing any of this.

4. Information Stored Only On Your Device

The following is created and kept only in the app's private storage on your phone, and is not transmitted to us:

  • Japa Mala counts and lifetime totals, reading/practice streak, and meditation minutes.
  • Daily ritual reminders — the rituals you enable and their times, used to schedule local notifications on your device. These notifications are generated on-device; we do not run a remote push service.
  • Deity images you add to the Deities board — these are picked from your device and stored as a local reference only.
  • App preferences — such as font size and display settings.
  • Your login token — stored in your device's encrypted secure storage so you stay signed in.

5. Content You Create On Our Servers

When you are signed in, the following is stored in your account on our servers so it syncs across sessions and devices:

  • Bookmarks — references to verses/sections you save.
  • Likes — the content you like.
  • Comments — text you post on verses or other content.
  • Community (Sangha) posts — text, and any image you choose to attach.

You are responsible for the content you post publicly. See our Terms of Service for community conduct rules.

6. How We Use Your Information

We use the information above only to:

  • Provide and operate the app (authenticate you, sync your bookmarks/likes/comments, render the community feed).
  • Send transactional emails you request or that are required — email verification and password-reset codes.
  • Maintain security, prevent abuse, and debug problems.

We do not use your data for advertising or sell it to third parties.

7. Service Providers and Sharing

We share data only with providers that help us run the Service, and only as needed:

  • Media hosting (Cloudinary) — stores and serves images you upload (profile, cover, and post images).
  • Email delivery — sends verification and password-reset emails to your address.
  • Hosting infrastructure — runs our application server and database.

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of our Service and users. We never sell your personal information.

8. Where Your Account Data Lives & Security

Account data is stored in our database (MongoDB) on our backend. We protect it with measures including:

  • Hashed passwords (we cannot read your password).
  • Token-based authentication (JWT) for signed-in requests, transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.
  • Encrypted on-device storage for your session token.

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information using reasonable industry practices.

9. Location & Panchang

The Panchang and festival dates are computed for a default reference location using established astronomical methods. The app does not collect your precise device location for these features. If a future version offers location-based Panchang, it will ask for your permission first, and you can decline.

10. Children's Privacy

Bhakti Bhoomi is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Your Rights & Choices

  • Access & update — you can view and update your profile in the app.
  • Delete your account — you can delete your account from within the app. Deleting your account removes your profile and associated account data from our active systems; some content may be retained briefly in backups before being purged, and anonymised or aggregate records may be kept as required by law.
  • Browse without an account — you can use the reading features without signing in.
  • Notifications — you can turn ritual reminders on or off at any time, or disable notifications in your device settings.

12. Data Retention

We keep account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will reflect material changes by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, via an in-app notice. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
